Microphlebectomy for Bulging Leg Veins

Published on December 30, 2016

Microphlebectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of medium or large unwanted varicose veins. The procedure is typically performed by creating small incisions on the patient’s legs. The incisions measure about a quarter of an inch, which is more than enough to extract the vein. The results of the procedure are frequently quite satisfactory for patients.

The incisions are extremely small, which eliminates the need for post-surgical sutures to close them up. Instead of stitches, the surgeon will close up the incisions using a special adhesive tape. This is medically referred to as a butterfly stitch.

A varicose vein is a bulging, widened, twisted vein under the skin on a person’s legs. The condition is fairly common and may cause pain and discomfort. Large varicose veins can look very unpleasant, often causing the affected person embarrassment.

Microphlebectomy is a solution for those looking to avoid such pain and embarrassment. It is an effective procedure that offers plenty of relief to the affected individual without forcing them to undergo major surgery.

The Procedure

The procedure is a minor one and generally executed on an outpatient basis, though some patients may require hospitalization after the procedure. To know if you require hospitalization, it is best to talk to your physician.

A local anesthetic will be used prior to the commencement of the procedure to numb the area being operated upon. Since it is only a local anesthetic being used, patients can expect to remain conscious and comfortable throughout the procedure.

Once the area is cleaned and treated with the local anesthetic, the surgeon will make very small incisions on the skin. The area of the incision will likely be situated right next to the affected vein. The vein is then removed using a phlebectomy hook, which is inserted through the incision. The entire procedure is completed in a matter of a few hours. Very rarely do patients complain of discomfort, as the local anesthetic is quite effective in eliminating pain.

After the Microphlebectomy Procedure

After the procedure has been completed, the leg is wrapped with a compression wrap that offers a snug and comfortable fit. Patients will also be required to wear graduated compression stockings for a few weeks after the procedure. The stockings will allow patients to resume their day-to-day activities without any significant problems.

There may be some minor bruising and swelling after the procedure, which is quite normal. The compression wrap and stockings are ideal for amelioration of these issues. The patient can expect to carry out normal activities almost immediately. However, physically intense activities such as sports or exercise must be avoided for a few days.

Not all patients recover in the exact same manner. There may be slight variations in recovery from patient to patient, so please talk to your surgeon or physician to learn more about recovery.
