Superficial Bulging Vein Treatment with Foam Sclerotherapy in Los Angeles

Conveniently located to serve Los Angeles

At Nu Vela Laser and Vein Center, we take pride in being a top vein clinic in the Los Angeles area. Led by board-certified physician and surgeon Dr. Raffi Dishakjian, we specialize in non-surgical varicose vein treatments and laser vein removal. With a legacy of offering minimally invasive varicose vein treatments since 2005, Dr. Dishakjian has successfully treated countless patients.

WHAT IS FOAM SCLEROTHERAPY?

Foam sclerotherapy, also known as ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy, is a relatively new vein treatment option in Los Angeles.

Unlike traditional sclerotherapy, which uses a liquid solution primarily for spider veins, this advanced technique delivers a foam solution that displaces blood and stays in contact with vein walls longer. This makes it particularly effective for treating larger veins, helping them collapse and gradually fade over time.

THE RESULTS WERE AMAZING!

“For many years, doctors told me the only way to remove my bulging, painful varicose veins was by performing surgery. But I didn’t want to go under the knife – with its risks, long downtime, and pain! As a massage therapist, I needed to be back to work quickly. At Nu Vela Vein Center, Dr. Dishakijan suggested foam sclerotherapy as a much safer, easier solution. It only took a few minutes, and the results were amazing! Within two days, the aching and heaviness that I had felt for 15 years disappeared. My legs already look a lot better in just two weeks. I’m finally looking forward to wearing shorts this summer”

FOAM SCLEROTHERAPY VS TRADITIONAL SCLEROTHERAPY

Ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy has distinct advantages over traditional sclerotherapy. The foamed nature of the sclerosant allows its visualization while it spreads inside the veins.

Foam sclerotherapy treatment requires using a smaller amount of the sclerosant chemical. This is an improvement compared to liquid sclerotherapy, especially when the veins are not small.

The increased potency of the foamed sclerosant makes better contact with the inside of the vein walls. Even with a smaller amount, it stays longer within the vein walls. The foam does not get diluted by readily mixing with the blood inside the vein.

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR FOAM SCLEROTHERAPY?

Foam sclerotherapy is ideal for individuals looking for a non-surgical spider vein treatment or varicose vein removal. You may be a good candidate if you have visible varicose or spider veins that cause discomfort or cosmetic concerns.

Good candidates are also those who prefer a minimally invasive option over surgery. Foam sclerotherapy is ideal for people with no history of deep vein thrombosis or other vascular conditions.

Candidates must be in good overall health and do not smoke. During your consultation, Dr. Dishakjian will assess your condition to determine if the foam sclerotherapy procedure is right for you. If you’re considering foam sclerotherapy treatment in LA, contact us and schedule a consultation.

Dr. Dishakjian – a Pioneer in Foam Sclerotherapy in Los Angeles

Being one of the first vein surgeons in the Los Angeles area to perform ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy, Dr. Raffi Dishakjian of Nu Vela Laser and Vein Center was featured on ABC Eyewitness News. Since then, he has successfully used the technique to treat the veins of thousands of patients.

In vein treatment, ultrasound imaging maps out the veins and detects venous reflux or blockages to blood flow (such as blood clots). The machine is also used to aid the placement of a needle, a catheter, or a laser fiber.

At Nu Vela Laser and Vein Center, Dr. Dishakjian uses ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy to treat branch varicosities of the saphenous veins. He may also use the technique for superficial or very tortuous varicosities unsuitable for Venefit™ and Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT).

Venefit and EVLT are two FDA-approved Endovenous procedures commonly used to treat leg varicose veins. Venefit and EVLT use a catheter or laser fiber which requires highly advanced skills to move through long, severely curved veins.

THE PROCEDURE

The foam, which is the consistency of thick shaving cream, is created in the office immediately before the injections. Traditional detergent class sclerosants (like STS) and harmless carbon dioxide gas are combined to create the foam. The foam’s thick consistency makes it very effective for treating large and bulging leg veins.

During the procedure, Dr. Dishakjian carefully traces the exact path of the problematic vein with an ultrasound scanner. He then inserts a needle into the vein with absolute precision and injects the foam. Ultrasound mapping of the veins allows the doctor to track and monitor the distribution of the foam inside the vein.

Within minutes of the injection, the unsightly, bulging, discolored veins are affected. The body gradually absorbs them, and they disappear over time without the scarring and bruising associated with surgery.

FOAM SCLEROTHERAPY AFTERCARE

Immediately after treatment, you will be fitted with a pressure bandage. This bandage will keep the vein walls close together, allowing optimal treatment results.

On the day following the treatment, you can replace the bandage with graduated pressure stockings. These should be worn for at least two weeks. Please go to compression therapy and watch the video on how to wear graduated compression stockings.

FOAM SCLEROTHERAPY RECOVERY

One of the advantages of foam sclerotherapy is the minimal downtime. Most patients can resume normal activities immediately, although strenuous exercise should be avoided for a few days. After the procedure, you may need to wear compression stockings to promote healing and improve circulation.

Mild bruising or swelling may occur but usually resolves within two to four weeks. Treated veins will gradually fade. Full results should be visible in three to six weeks for small veins, and three to six months for larger veins.

To achieve the best results, follow your vein doctor’s post-treatment care instructions. If you have any questions about your recovery, don’t hesitate to contact our team.

BENEFITS OF FOAM SCLEROTHERAPY

Foam sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment for spider veins and varicose veins, offering several key benefits:

  • No surgery required – This procedure involves no incisions, making it a safer, more comfortable alternative to invasive treatments.
  • More effective vein closure – The foam solution stays in contact with vein walls longer than liquid treatments, improving results.
  • Quick and convenient – Sessions take just 30 to 45 minutes, with minimal downtime, so you can resume daily activities the same day.
  • Safe and well-tolerated – Foam sclerotherapy has a lower risk of complications compared to surgical options, making it a trusted choice for vein treatment.
