Superficial Bulging Vein Treatment with Foam Sclerotherapy in Los Angeles

Conveniently located to serve Los Angeles

At Nu Vela Laser and Vein Center, we offer several vein treatment options in Los Angeles including foam sclerotherapy. Our medical director and top-rated Los Angeles varicose vein expert Dr. Dishakjian has helped numerous patients by providing them with outstanding results from their foam sclerotherapy in Los Angeles.

WHAT IS FOAM SCLEROTHERAPY?

Foam sclerotherapy, also known as ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy, is one of the relatively new vein treatment options in Los Angeles.

During the treatment, your Doctor injects the treatment substance as foam rather than a liquid, as in Sclerotherapy (a technique usually used for removing spider veins). The injected foam irritates the vein, causing its irreversible damage and gradual disappearance.

THE RESULTS WERE AMAZING!

“For many years, doctors told me the only way to remove my bulging, painful varicose veins was by performing surgery. But I didn’t want to go under the knife – with its risks, long downtime, and pain! As a massage therapist, I needed to be back to work quickly. At Nu Vela Vein Center, Dr. Dishakijan suggested foam sclerotherapy as a much safer, easier solution. It only took a few minutes, and the results were amazing! Within two days, the aching and heaviness that I had felt for 15 years disappeared. My legs already look a lot better in just two weeks. I’m finally looking forward to wearing shorts this summer”

FOAM SCLEROTHERAPY VS TRADITIONAL SCLEROTHERAPY

Ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy has distinct advantages over traditional sclerotherapy since the foamed nature of the sclerosant allows its visualization while it spreads inside the veins.

The treatment of a particular vein with foam sclerotherapy requires the use of a smaller amount of the sclerosant chemical than its treatment with liquid sclerotherapy. This, of course, is important when the veins are not small.

The increase in the potency of the foamed sclerosant compared to liquid sclerosant, and hence the need for a smaller amount of sclerosant is explained by the fact that compared with a liquid sclerosing solution, foam makes better contact with the inside of the vein walls, stays longer in contact with the vein walls, provides larger contact surface, and the foam does not get diluted by readily mixing with the blood inside the vein.

In vein treatment, ultrasound imaging is used to map out the veins and to detect venous reflux or blockages to blood flow (such as blood clots). The machine is also used as an aid in the placement of a needle, a catheter, or a laser fiber.

At Nu Vela, Dr. Dishakjian uses ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy to treat branch varicosities of the saphenous veins. He may also use the technique for superficial or very tortuous varicosities unsuitable for Venefit™ and Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT). Venefit and EVLT are two FDA-approved Endovenous procedures commonly used for the treatment of leg varicose veins.

Note that Venefit and EVLT  entail the use of a catheter or a laser fiber, which are often impossible to advance along the length of severely curved veins. In addition, treating very superficial veins with the above-mentioned heat-based techniques could be unsafe due to the potential of causing skin burns.

The Procedure

The foam, with the consistency of thick shaving cream, is created in the office immediately before the injections by combining and agitating traditional detergent class sclerosants (like STS) with harmless carbon dioxide gas. The thick consistency of the foam makes it very effective for treating large and bulging leg veins.

During the procedure, Dr. Dishakjian carefully traces the exact path of the problematic vein with the help of an ultrasound scanner. He then inserts a needle into the vein with absolute precision and injects the foam. Ultrasound mapping of the veins allows the doctor to track and monitor the distribution of the foam inside the vein.

Within minutes of the injection, the unsightly, bulging, discolored veins are affected. They are then gradually absorbed by the body to disappear over time without the scarring and bruising associated with surgery.

Immediately after treatment, you will be fitted with a pressure bandage. This will ensure optimal treatment outcomes by keeping the walls of the vein close together. On the day following the treatment, you can replace the bandage with graduated pressure stockings. These should be worn for at least two weeks. Go to compression therapy and watch the video on how to wear graduated compression stockings.
