What Is Hand Vein Treatment?
Hand vein treatment involves medical methods to reduce the size and prominence of bulging veins. These procedures target the vascular structures on the back of the hand to create a smoother skin profile. Our clinic focuses on techniques that are clinically validated and require very little recovery time.
Benefits of Hand Vein Removal and Therapy
Addressing the visibility of dorsal veins involves several medical advantages. This hand vein therapy provides measurable results for patients seeking to alter their vascular profile:
- Significant reduction in the visibility of bulging dorsal veins
- Outpatient procedures that require minimal recovery time
- Results that address the underlying vascular prominence
- Long-term removal of treated vessels through clinical intervention

Ideal Candidates for Hand Vein Treatment
Clinical assessment identifies several physical characteristics that make an individual a suitable candidate for hand vein removal. Ideal candidates for hand vein treatment in Los Angeles typically include:
- Individuals with a loss of subcutaneous fat and thinning skin on the back of the hands
- Patients with prominent, rope-like veins, visible tendons, and joint protrusions
- Individuals with a skeletal appearance or discoloration caused by dark, visible vascular structures
- Slender individuals or those with a low body fat percentage
- Active patients whose regular exercise or weight lifting has pushed veins toward the skin surface
- Middle-aged individuals seeking to address the telltale signs of aging on their hands
Health Implications of Hand and Arm Veins
Unlike varicose veins in the leg, prominent veins on arms and hands are normal functioning veins. Accordingly, their presence does not have any health implications. Currently, there is controversy among physicians regarding the treatment of hand veins. Some would recommend hiding these veins by plumping the hand with fillers rather than removing them.
Doctors argue against removing hand veins because they may be needed for future intravenous (IV) access during hospitalization and surgery. This is true, but there is a rich network of superficial and deep veins in the arms and hands. Accordingly, a few can be saved for future needs or for returning blood to the heart.
Therefore, if you want to get rid of some prominent hand and arm veins for cosmetic enhancement, it is possible and safe. Needless to say that your doctor should be knowledgeable and selectively leave a few of the less prominent superficial veins for IV access.
ARMS AND HANDS BEFORE AND AFTER VEIN TREATMENT WITH SCLEROTHERAPY

*Individual results may vary.
Hand Vein Treatment Options
In principle, any techniques used for leg vein treatment can be used to remove hand and arm veins. These include endovenous laser therapy (EVLT), microphlebectomy, foam sclerotherapy, topical lasers, and sclerotherapy. While all these techniques have been practiced by many physicians in the USA and yield the desirable outcome, Dr. Dishakjian recommends sclerotherapy to most of his patients. His choice is based on the fact that bruising is the least with this treatment. Moreover, it is the most cost-effective of all; the bandaging period is short, and the results are dramatic and long-lasting.
EVLT treatment for arm vein treatment is unnecessary and costly, and risks skin burns, whereas microphlebectomy involves multiple incisions and potentially visible scarring and bruising. Surface lasers are painful and effective only on small veins. Generally, these veins are also not large enough to require foam sclerotherapy.
LASER REMOVAL OF SUN AND AGE SPOTS ON HANDS

*Individual results may vary.
As for hand vein removal, Dr. Dishakjian will use sclerotherapy or occasionally another convenient vein removal procedure to selectively eliminate your bulging arm and hand veins. Dr. Dishakjian will always make sure that at least one superficial vein is readily available in the event of an emergency. After removing the veins, the doctor can hide, if you wish, any remaining veins and joint protrusions with dermal fillers.
Hand Rejuvenation and Hand Vein Removal at Nu Vela
Dr. Raffi Dishakjian, the vein specialist at the center, has the skills and experience to permanently eliminate unwanted prominent hand and arm veins. Moreover, Dr. Dishakjian is a cosmetic surgeon specializing in minimally invasive procedures and uses lasers and dermal fillers daily. Accordingly, after examining your hand and arm veins, he will propose the treatment plan that best suits your hands and budget.
Laser and IPL treatments are excellent for removing sun and age spots. Dermal fillers and fat transfer are also great complementary procedures for hiding your hand veins, exposed tendons, and bony knuckles, and restoring lost volume.

Sclerotherapy for Hand Vein Treatment
During a hand vein sclerotherapy session, your doctor uses a micro-needle and injects a sclerosing solution into an unsightly vein. The tiny needle generally causes very little pain. No anesthetic is needed. The sclerosing solution causes the small veins on the dorsum of the hand to blanch (turn white) and gradually disappear. Clearance of larger veins usually takes a few weeks and, in some cases, may take up to six weeks.
A typical hand and arm vein reduction or elimination session may last 15-20 minutes and involve multiple injections. You will leave the office with a small bandage wrap on your hand, but you can drive and continue all types of moderate physical activity. You have to wear the bandage for a few days and avoid active tanning until the healing process is complete.
RECOVERING FROM SCLEROTHERAPY FOR HAND VEINS
Bruising is minimal and short-term if it occurs. So far, none of the patients treated in our clinic in Los Angeles has ever had an infection or significant complications. Most hand veins typically disappear after only one sclerotherapy session, whereas larger veins on the forearm may need additional sessions a few weeks apart. All patients need to come back for re-evaluation.
COST OF HAND VEIN REMOVAL
The fee you pay for hand vein treatment, like leg vein treatments, will strictly depend on the time Dr. Dishakjian spends on eliminating the veins. We do not charge an extra premium for treating hand veins. So, rest assured that the overall fee you pay at Nu Vela Laser and Vein Center will be substantially less than the fee quoted by other vein doctors in California, whose fees are in the range of $2500 to $3000 for treating both hands.
Note that hand vein therapy is not reimbursable by insurance companies because the treatment is considered strictly cosmetic. Please don’t hesitate to contact our front desk with any questions.
