Treating Embarrassing Veins with Venefit Thermal Ablation

Published on June 29, 2018

Varicose veins are large, sometimes purplish, swollen veins that are visible just below the skin. They commonly occur as a result of carrying a large amount of weight whether it be from a pregnancy or general weight gain. There are also some people who are genetically predisposed to developing varicose veins and those who get them from standing for a long period of time.

Varicose veins occur when certain valves of the body fail to function properly. They occur when blood pools in veins. As the pressure increases, the veins will become enlarged and swollen.

The appearance of varicose veins can be quite embarrassing, especially when they appear on areas of the body that aren’t easily hidden. In order to help those suffering from any such embarrassment and keep the skin smooth, an innovative technique known as Venefit thermal ablation was developed.

What is Venefit Thermal Ablation?

Venefit thermal ablation is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that is used to treat varicose veins as well as many other venous disorders.

During this procedure, you will be administered an anesthetic to help ease any discomfort. Once the effects of the anesthesia has kicked in, the vein that is to be treated is identified with the help of ultrasound technology. A small incision is then made near the vein and a catheter filled with salt water and a numbing agent is inserted into the vein.

After injecting the solution through the length of the diseased vein, a probe that gives out radio-frequency energy is used to heat the walls of the vein. As the collagen in the walls heat up, the veins start shrinking. Soon, the vein is pinched close. The blood that was clogging up the vein will now be rerouted through other, healthy veins.

The entire procedure may take up to three hours to complete. Over the course of time, you will notice the swelling and purplish hue vanish from sight.

Preparing for the Procedure

Prior to the treatment, you will need to provide your medical history to your doctor and you may be required to undergo a a few preliminary tests to ensure that you are an eligible candidate for the procedure. Patients are required to strictly refrain from smoking and taking painkillers such as aspirin and ibuprofen. These medications are blood thinners and may cause complications during the procedure.

If you happen to be taking any beta blockers or blood pressure medications, consult your physician before the procedure as you may need to adjust the dosage of such medications.

After the Procedure

Complete recovery may take up to one to two weeks. The recovery time varies from person to person. Immediately after the surgery, patients may experience some slight swelling and bruising around the area where the procedure has been performed. These are temporary side effects of the procedure and will subside as you heal.

Your doctor will give you specific post-operative instructions that will help you take care of the treatment area. If followed carefully, you’ll ensure quick recovery so that you can return to all of the things you enjoy doing.
