Endovenous Laser Treatment for Varicose Veins

Published on January 27, 2017

A lot of people over the age of 60 suffer from varicose veins. As a matter of fact, over 30 percent of all the adults in the world suffer from discolored, achy, and bulging veins. The valves in your leg are responsible for pushing blood to your heart. If they are damaged, it can cause the blood to leak and pool in the feet and legs.

Although sclerotherapy is the most commonly prescribed treatment for varicose veins, a lot of people are allergic to sclerosant, ruling out the procedure as a viable option. A number of patients also prefer a minimally invasive procedure as they are not too comfortable with needles. This is where endovenous laser treatment of the varicose veins with the help of Sciton Pro-V laser comes in.

It offers a completely safe, fast, and effective way to get rid of leg veins. You no longer have to imagine what it is like to have healthy legs.

How Does the Treatment Work?

Dr. Dishakjian will first numb the area to be treated with a local anesthetic. Your vitals will be monitored closely by a trained anesthesiologist. He will then insert a laser fiber into the vein. This fiber is designed to deliver pulses to the vein causing it to collapse.

The laser targets the water in your blood. This captures the heat in the damaged vein, thereby ensuring that there is no direct contact with the wall of the vein. The best part about this procedure is that it is completely pain-free.

Now, you may ask “If it is pain-free, why do I need anesthesia?” Anesthesia is monitored just to meet the clinical standards for safety. Endovenous laser treatment stops the formation of any future varicosities as well. Over time, your body will reabsorb the treated vessel.

The treatment takes close to an hour. Most of the people who opt for this procedure find it easy and comfortable. The treated vessel usually closes up after one treatment. Studies have shown that the vessels close up completely two days after the procedure, and the chances of it reoccurring is less than 1 percent.

If you are concerned about cost, it is important to note that your medical insurance will cover the cost of treatment.

How Will your Legs Look after the Treatment?

The surgeon will wrap your legs up with compression bandages following the procedure. You should be able to walk in less than 30 minutes. There might be mild swelling and bruising in the treated area, but it will subside in a day. After the treatment, you may resume your normal activities immediately.

If for some reason, you experience any discomfort a day or more after the treatment, call your surgeon immediately. Before undergoing the treatment, you should make sure that your surgeon has extensive experience with the procedure.
